Tang Writing Competition
Each Spring, CMWL sponsors an essay competition in which law students at each of Arizona’s three law schools (ASU, U of A, and Phoenix School of Law) may participate. The competition is named after the late 9th Circuit Judge Thomas Tang, in recognition of and to honor his special achievements and interest in diversifying the legal profession.
Prizes: $1000 for first place essay, $500 for second place essay. Winners are announced and prizes are distributed at the annual Minority Bar Convention in April. In the past, the winning essay has been printed in the Arizona Attorney.

Law School Outreach
CMWL actively coordinates events with bar members and students at each of the Arizona law schools in order to encourage the advancement of minorities and women in the law through recruitment and hiring. Committee members provide information, advice, and contacts to law students about State Bar programs and CMWL specifically. For current law school outreach events, please see our Upcoming Events section of this page.

Statement of Goals
In 1992, CMWL surveyed legal employers within Arizona to determine minority and women participation, and the State Bar Board of Governors adopted CMWL’s “Statement of Goals for Increasing Minority and Women Representation and Retention.” Various legal employers became signatories to the Statement of Goals, and data was collected and studied from 1993 to 2003. CMWL submitted its report on the Statement of Goals to the Board of Governors in April 2006. From that report came many recommendations, including the hiring of a full-time Diversity Director for the State Bar and formation of a Bar Leadership Institute, which have since been adopted. State Bar Diversity Department
Through the efforts of CMWL and others, the Arizona State Bar created a Diversity Department. Please see its web page for a wealth of information on diversity in the legal profession, State Bar diversity programming, and links to sister bar organizations.
State Bar Leadership Institute
Also through the efforts of CMWL and others, the State Bar created the Bar Leadership Institute (BLI).
