Statement from State Bar of Arizona President Helen Perry Grimwood
On the Resignation of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor
July 1, 2005
The State Bar of Arizona thanks Justice Sandra Day O’Connor for
her long, brilliant career of exemplary service to the Justice system,
and for the honor that she has brought to the lawyers of Arizona. Before
President Reagan appointed her as the first woman to the United States
Supreme Court, she was an assistant Arizona Attorney General, Majority
Leader of the Arizona State Senate, and an Arizona state court judge on
both the trial bench and the Court of Appeals.
We are grateful that she has used her talent and great legal mind to
benefit our justice system and the public, and that in doing so she never
lost the pioneering spirit and common sense she developed growing up on
her family ranch in Arizona. We look forward to welcoming her home to
Arizona, and are proud that she has become a legal legend.
